South Africa draft insurance bill released for public comment: Cenfri and FinMark Trust feedback

The National Treasury (NT) and the Financial Services Board (FSB) of South Africa have made a request for public comments on the draft Insurance Bill approved by the government in April 2015. Cenfri, on behalf of FinMark Trust, has provided comments on key sections of the bill that are noted as particularly relevant to microinsurance (MI).

In 2014, Cenfri engagement manager Mia Thom attended the "Microinsurance Learning Sessions – Protecting the Working Poor" from the 8th to 10th of September in Douala, the economic capital of Cameroon. The learning sessions were hosted by Conférence Interafricaine des Marchés d'Assurances (CIMA) as part of a larger agenda to develop insurance markets to better serve lower income people. CIMA is the insurance policy maker and regulator for 14 West African countries.

The role of technological innovation in scaling up access to insurance and its regulatory challenges: a focus on m-insurance

On June 5th 2014, the African Insurance Organization (AIO), the Access to Insurance Initiative (A2ii), the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS), and the Microinsurance Network (MIN) hosted a Policy Seminar on Microinsurance Regulation for Insurance Supervisory Authorities in Kigali, Rwanda. The Policy Seminar was designed as a Consultative Forum to provide a platform for exchange between insurance supervisors and participants from the insurance industry. The Forum focused on topics and strategies connecting regulation, supervision and policy, and industry action. Cenfri response to the 9th International Microinsurance Conference

Delegates from Cenfri recently attended the 9th International Microinsurance Conference (IMC) hosted by the Munich Re Foundation and the Microinsurance Network in Jakarta, Indonesia, to participate, facilitate and present on behalf of its partners. The conference was well attended by 400 participants from over 60 countries. Delegates from Cenfri had the following roles: Herman Smit presented the Business case for retailers from Cenfri's work with FinMark Trust at the parallel session on Distribution: Selling microinsurance profitably and facilitated a parallel session on the Business case for microinsurance.
