Toolkit: Implementing a data-driven approach to MSME insurance

4 December, 2024

Despite their potential contribution to economic growth, MSMEs face a variety of risks that hinder their ability to operate and grow. Insurance providers play a critical role in helping MSMEs manage these risks, yet this segment remains significantly underserved.

To bridge this gap, insurers must move beyond generic, one-size-fits-all products and instead develop tailored solutions that address the unique and evolving needs of MSMEs. Data is central to this transformation—not only for risk modelling and pricing but also for gaining deeper customer insights, enabling informed decision-making, and delivering meaningful support.

This toolkit, developed in collaboration with the Microinsurance Network’s (MiN) Best Practice Group (BPG) on Insurance for MSMEs, outlines four key steps for adopting a data-driven approach to MSME insurance. It also highlights success stories from organisations that have effectively leveraged data to better serve this vital sector.
