Webinar: Emerging evidence for open finance in Africa

23 January, 2024

Join us for a webinar on the feasibility and implementation of Open Finance in Africa on the 8 February at 15:00 to 16:00 CAT.

While Open Finance and data sharing hold great potential in theory, their practical implementation can pose significant risks if not tailored to the local context in under-developed markets. Inappropriately applied data sharing approaches can heighten cybersecurity threats and data theft risks for both individuals and Financial Service Providers (FSPs). Additionally, they can escalate operational costs for providers without yielding the anticipated benefits for consumers. Therefore, there is a critical need for an evidenced based approach to determining the feasibility of Open Finance in Africa.

In our upcoming webinar, we delve into key themes identified through an in-depth feasibility assessment in two African countries, Rwanda and Zambia.  The project, in partnership with the Hewlett foundation and Smart Africa, aims to positively contribute to societal outcomes by using data more effectively – enabling greater innovation and competition in the financial sector, and improved decision making in the public sector.

The webinar will go beyond the basics of Open Finance, delivering insights into the approach used for conducting an initial feasibility assessment, and identifying a few of the key elements for an effective Open Finance framework.

A panel discussion will feature expert guests from both the private and public sectors. Attendees will receive valuable insight into the driving forces behind data sharing from the perspective of each sector, and the key challenges facing the initiative.

Panelists will include:

  • Robert Phiri: Chief Executive Officer of the Payments Association of Zambia
  • Pamela Umutesi: Senior Analyst at the National Bank of Rwanda
  • Chilekwa Banda: Chairperson of the Association for Digital Finance Practitioners in Zambia
