Cape Town, South Africa (Full-time, On-site preferred, Remote considered)

Cenfri, an independent not-for-profit development consultancy based in Cape Town and Kigali, is seeking a Legal Associate who is curious about the world and wants to improve systems to make the world a more inclusive and prosperous place. A Legal Associate is responsible for conducting regulatory and policy analysis to support various project teams on different aspects of financial regulation and data governance; as well as managing projects and teams. It s expected that the Legal Associate will focus primarily on Cenfri’s portfolio of work with regulatory authorities and policymakers; developing and/or reviewing regulatory instruments and supporting regulators, supervisors and policymakers with technical assistance and build capacity to support positive impact. However, it is also expected that the Legal Associate be flexible to work on other topics and projects as may arise.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead research and analysis to generate insights for action in areas like financial sector regulation and policy, and data governance.
  • Manage projects and teams, ensuring delivery within budget and deadlines, with opportunities for global impact.
  • Engage stakeholders, build networks, and identify future opportunities to drive positive change.
  • Develop junior team members, fostering collaboration and contributing to Cenfri’s inclusive culture.

Who We’re Looking For:

  • 3+ years’ relevant experience in practicing law, working within a regulatory authority or similar, or as a consultant focused on regulatory analysis, support and/ or technical assistance.  
  • Ideally have some experience with financial services, financial inclusion, digital transformation, sustainable finance or a related area.
  • Master’s degree or similar qualification in law or related fields.
  • Strong project management, analytical, and communication skills, with a passion for development.
    Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with a willingness to travel across Africa and beyond.

Location and Application

The hybrid position is based in Cape Town; on-site preferred for teamwork (2 days per week), but open to discussing remote working for the right candidate.
